About
The Saint Raymond Fellowship for Canonical Education (SRF) is an initiative of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, in partnership with The Catholic University of America (CUA), that funds and forms mission-driven lay leaders in canon law while supporting the work of the Portland Metropolitan Tribunal. Fellows complete a hybrid online and in-person four-year Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) program through CUA while serving in the Tribunal, receiving both academic formation and practical experience in the administration of justice within the Church.

How the Fellowship Works
Through the Fellowship, participants progressively assume greater responsibilities within the Tribunal. Fellows begin by serving as ecclesiastical notaries and case workers in marriage cases, later becoming auditors who take testimony. Upon earning the JCL, graduates may be offered positions such as defender of the bond or advocate and, following additional experience and discernment, may be appointed as tribunal judges or other leadership positions. Fellows are supported financially during their studies while serving the Portland Metropolitan Tribunal, but, upon the conclusion of their studies, they are free to serve the Church wherever they choose.

Mission & ImpactThe Saint Raymond Fellowship prepares skilled lay leaders through an integrated model of academic study and hands-on tribunal ministry. By combining rigorous formation with practical experience, the program strengthens the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Portland while forming future canon lawyers who will serve the Church in leadership with competence, justice, and pastoral charity. As an educational initiative and scholarship program, the Fellowship is supported through donor generosity, grants, and fundraising efforts.
