Practices that undermine the value of ALL human life - such as abortion, assisted-suicide, the death penalty, racism - have no place in a just society. We are pro-life for the whole life - womb to tomb - from conception to natural death.

Abortion is the greatest human rights violation of our time. Women and their children deserve better than abortion. We work and pray to live in a society that respects and values a culture of life. In 1997, physician-assisted suicide was legalized in Oregon and the state ennacted a "Death with Dignity Act"  which allowed Oregon doctors to write a suicide prescription for a consenting person who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

As disciples of Our Lord, we know that life is a gift from God. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. Additionally, suicide contradicts our natural inclination to preserve and perpetuate our life, and it also contradicts the way Jesus Christ accepted death.

Suicide is gravely contrary to charity and to the three loves that constitute our existence: the love for God, the just and proper love of self, and the love for one’s neighbor (breaking the ties of solidarity with one’s family and nation).

As we encounter loved ones in our families and communities who are considering Physician-Assisted Suicide, let us address this critical end-of-life issue in the context of our Catholic faith.

The death penalty is unnecessary as a means of defense. It contradicts God’s plan for merciful justice and fosters a culture of revenge and unforgivingness.
