By mandate of Pope Leo XIV, the Apostolic Penitentiary has granted a plenary indulgence for the Cathedral Centennial Jubilee at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland (Feb. 14, 2026–Feb. 13, 2027). The faithful who participate in the jubilee rites or make a pilgrimage under the usual conditions may receive this special grace, and Archbishop Alexander K. Sample is authorized to impart the Papal Blessing on a designated day.

On Saturday, February 14, the Archdiocese of Portland celebrated the 100th anniversary of the dedication of St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in NW Portland. In his homily, Archbishop Sample reflected on the importance of the Cathedral as the spiritual home of all Catholics in western Oregon. He reminded the faithful that while the Cathedral is a magnificent building, it is ultimately the people of God who are the Church, living stones who form the Mystical Body of Christ.
From February 8–13, Archbishop Alexander K. Sample visited four seminarians from the Archdiocese of Portland who are currently studying at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. While the Archbishop traditionally takes the seminarians on pilgrimage during his annual visit, the group remained in Rome this year due to his shorter trip, planned around the Centennial of St. Mary’s Cathedral. Instead, they spent their time visiting various churches, meeting one-on-one, and enjoying traditional Italian cuisine.

From January 30 to 31, Archbishop Sample visited St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park where eight seminarians from the Archdiocese are in formation. During his time there, the Archbishop shared meals with the men, celebrated a private Mass with them, and met individually with each seminarian.
