Statement on Recent ICE Activity in Oregon

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, praised be Jesus Christ! 

It is with a heavy heart that I address all of you, my dear people. My heart is heavy because of the continued fear and anxiety that runs through the community of our Hispanic brothers and sisters in this Archdiocese. This is due to the increased ICE activity within our communities, even now in the vicinity of some of our parishes. 

As I address all of you, I am attending the annual meeting of the United States Bishops in Baltimore, Maryland. I want to assure our Hispanic brothers and sisters that the shepherds of the church in the United States are working diligently to advocate for their humane and respectful treatment. We are doing all that we can to alleviate this suffering. 

As your Archbishop and spiritual father, I wish I could remove this cross from you. But I want to assure you that I am deeply concerned over what you are experiencing right now, along with all of your local parish priests. I know this is a great burden for them as well, because they feel helpless to take this cross from you. 

It does not matter whether some of our brothers and sisters have proper documentation or not. They are our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ, and have a human dignity that comes not from government, but from our loving God. Please know that I and your pastors stand with you in solidarity during this difficult time. 

To all of my brothers priests who are caring for our people during these difficult times, I want to assure you of my support and prayers. We are in this together to uphold the dignity of every human person, every child of God. 

I ask all of us to lean on the love that Jesus has for each one of us. He alone is our hope, and in him alone do we trust. He is with you always and will never abandon you. Place yourselves in his hands. All of you are deeply in my prayers each and every day. God bless you! Viva Cristo Rey!

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en el Señor, ¡alabado sea Jesucristo! 

Es con el corazón apesadumbrado que me dirijo a todos ustedes, mi querido pueblo. Mi corazón está apesadumbrado por el temor y la ansiedad que continúan afectando a la comunidad de nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos en esta arquidiócesis. Esto se debe al aumento de la actividad de ICE dentro de nuestras comunidades, incluso ahora, en las cercanías de algunas de nuestras parroquias. 

Mientras me dirijo a ustedes, me encuentro participando en la reunión anual de los Obispos de los Estados Unidos en Baltimore, Maryland. Quiero asegurarles a nuestros hermanos y hermanas hispanos que los pastores de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos estamos trabajando diligentemente para abogar por un trato humano y respetuoso hacia ustedes. Estamos haciendo todo lo que está a nuestro alcance para aliviar este sufrimiento. 

Como su Arzobispo y padre espiritual, quisiera poder quitarles esta cruz. Pero quiero asegurarles que estoy profundamente preocupado por lo que están viviendo en este momento, junto con todos sus sacerdotes en sus parroquias. Sé que esto también es una gran carga para ellos, porque se sienten impotentes para quitarles esta cruz. 

No importa si algunos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas tienen documentos o no. Todos son nuestros hermanos y hermanas en el Cuerpo de Cristo y poseen una dignidad humana que no proviene del gobierno, sino de nuestro Dios amoroso. Sepan que tanto yo como sus pastores estamos con ustedes en solidaridad durante este momento difícil. 

A todos mis hermanos sacerdotes, que están cuidando de nuestro pueblo en estos tiempos difíciles, quiero asegurarles mi apoyo y mis oraciones. Estamos juntos en esto, para defender la dignidad de toda persona humana, de cada hijo de Dios. 

Les pido a todos que nos apoyemos en el amor que Jesús tiene por cada uno de nosotros. Solo Él es nuestra esperanza y solo en Él confiamos. Él está siempre con ustedes y nunca los abandonará. Pónganse en sus manos. Todos ustedes están profundamente en mis oraciones cada día. ¡Dios los bendiga! ¡Viva Cristo Rey!
