Archbishop Sample Visits Jesuit High School

Archbishop Alexander K. Sample celebrated Holy Mass last Friday at Jesuit High School Portland with more than 800 students, family members, and faculty. In his homily on the day’s Gospel, Mark 12:28-34, Archbishop Sample reflected on Christ’s teaching that the two greatest commandments are to love God with all one’s heart and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. He reminded students that these two commandments always go together. Addressing students gathered for Mass, the Archbishop noted that regardless of their backgrounds, they share a great privilege in receiving a high quality education. He said that such a gift also brings responsibility, calling them to use what they have received in service of others.

Drawing from Pope Leo’s Dilexit Te, Archbishop Sample emphasized Christ’s call to love the poor and those who suffer. He encouraged students to reach out in love to those around them, among their peers, within their families, and in their communities. He reminded them that charity is not only expressed through material giving, but also through genuine care, attention, and compassion for others. Archbishop Sample concluded by encouraging students not to live only according to their own ambitions and goals, but to remain attentive to those around them who are suffering and in need.
